Parents upset by “Sex Test” at Hardy Middle School

12. October 2010 by rurban 0 Comments

The Georgetown Dish reports that a graphic test about sex was administered to 7th grade youth at Hardy Middle School.  As I have recently reported, Michelle Rhee kicked out the popular ULTRA Teen Choice abstinence centered HIV and pregnancy prevention program, which was being provided at no charge to several DC public schools.  Instead, she has now paid Metro Teen Aids at least $95,000 to bring in graphic programs that do not promote abstinence but rather promote accepting all kinds of sexual behavior (gay, straight, transgender, etc) and using condoms.  Unfortunately, programs like this do not increase the rate of consistent condom use, and they undermine the values that the great majority of parents want to communicate to their children:  The Georgetown dish article says:

When she picked up her 12-year-old son at Hardy Middle School last Tuesday afternoon, "Susan" knew something was wrong. Her son looked "disturbed," his father said later. Susan asked her son what had happened at school. A test had been given in a health/physical education class filled with 7th-grade boys and girls.
One classmate called it a "sex test."
"What is your gender?" was the first question. The choice of answers:
a) Male
b) Female
c) Transgender (M to F)
d) Transgender (F to M)
The 12-year-old was slightly bewildered. He noticed other children seemed confused.
The questions became more graphic:
"How sure are you that you....
...Can name all four body fluids that can transmit HIV.
...Know the difference between oral, vaginal, and anal sex.
...Can correctly put a condom on yourself or your partner.
...Will avoid getting yourself or your partner pregnant if you have sex.
...Can convince a reluctant partner to use barrier protection (i.e. condoms, dental dams) during sex."

I am for having an elected school board that better represents the values of parents in DC.  My opponent David Catania is not.  Catania also has heavily promoted the type of sexual education that is being given at Hardy Middle School, which is using the “Making Proud Choices” curriculum.  His office authored the Youth Sexual Health Report  that promotes the acceptance of all kinds of sexual behavior and sexual types.  I believe that parents should determine what type of sexual health education is taught in their children’s schools, and that that sex education should be aligned with the parents values.  Additionally, parents must be informed ahead of time about what is being taught.

The Georgetown Dish article is another example of how Ms. Rhee, in collusion with David Catania and other Councilmembers is not operating transparently, but rather with hidden agendas that are harmful for youth.
